Behavioural Difficulties

ADHD

Support attention and self-control through structure, movement, clear expectations and frequent, positive feedback.

Whole-class strategies

  • Keep instructions short, clear and one step at a time, and check understanding.
  • Seat the pupil away from distractions and close to the teacher.
  • Use visual timetables, timers and clear signals for transitions.
  • Build in regular movement breaks and legitimate reasons to move.

Supporting focus

  • Break tasks into short chunks with clear finishing points.
  • Give a discreet cue to refocus rather than public correction.
  • Allow fidget tools or standing options if they help concentration.
  • Reduce clutter on worksheets and on the board.

Encouraging positive behaviour

  • Catch the pupil being good and give immediate, specific praise.
  • Use frequent small rewards rather than long-term targets.
  • Give responsibilities that channel energy positively (handing out, messages).
  • Be consistent and calm with expectations and consequences.

Do

  • Give immediate, frequent, positive feedback.
  • Keep tasks short with clear goals.
  • Provide legitimate movement opportunities.

Avoid

  • Don't rely on long verbal instructions.
  • Don't remove breaks or movement as a punishment.
  • Don't publicly reprimand for impulsive behaviour.
